How Does This Happen - a PT Question
  • How does this foal exist? I thought the max PT for a second generation was 10.4, based on the idea that exceptional foundations are equivalent to a second generation horse and exceptionally perfect PT is 10.4. This foal has a 10.5 PT with two regular foundation parents without boosts. Just want to make sure I understand what’s at play here to see if there is opportunity to improve my breeding program.

  • I think I remember seeing a 10.9 PT score on a 2G before, but I can't remember who had the foal. But I'm positive 10.4 is not the max, I have seen higher.
  • Even from regular foundation parents, not exceptional producers?
  • I had a 10.8 2nd gen

  • I know she comes from exceptional parents so she may not count, but this filly was 10.10 inconsistent (if I remember right). When I changed her to consistent, she jumped to an 11.

  • There isn't a 'max' for PT at any level. I think you probably just got EXTREMELY lucky!

  • Both of the example foals come from B/Red parents. I know they’re also Gen 2, but I’m interested in learning more about foals of regular foundations - C/Yellow papered.

Unfortunately not my foal, just curious about this one I saw. So there is no PT limit at all, just a lower chance the higher you get? I’d think there has to be a limit somewhere or we’d be seeing horses with a 100 PT score at some point.

  • There's a cap for PT scores, I think right now it is 14.
  • We’re up to at least 15.1

  • I've had a look at my 2nd gen horses. This is what I have so far for intact horses.

I probably did have mares that had higher PT scores, but they didn't test sup to their dams and got auctioned off or yummed.

As far as I've been able to determine, this is my best showhorse

I don't tend to keep 2nd gen rejects because there's so many of them, and I usually breed the higher generations first, and those tend to fill up available space for showstock first.
  • 11 PT 2nd gen foal, I find they go anywhere from 9.5 to 11 when breeding 2 expro foundation parents.

  • What if you start from regular foundations instead of ExPro?
  • I don't think there really is a maximum per se. I looked through my 2nd gens, and these are the highest for each category:
    B x Red: 11.0 (just one)
    B x Yellow/C x Red: 10.6 (two)
    C x Yellow: 10.5 (one)

  • @SherwoodStables that last boy is exactly the kind I am interested in, since he comes from just regular foundations. 10.5 The highest PT I have seen, thanks for sharing him.
  • I seem to recall Ammit saying that there is a cap on PT scores, but that we aren't there yet.

10.9! She comes from exceptional parents, though

  • I think there are quite a few that highbfrom exceptional parents. Right now I am just studying regular foundation parents because it’s been to complicated for me to try to mix and match regular/exceptional, so all I breed is regular.

I love that coloring though! If you ever sell eggs or put her up for brood let me know, I’d love to cross her with one of Whim’s sons.

  • On the higher end, there is a cap on breeding ability, but not on PT. But being that the breeding cap is maybe say the equivalent of a 14PT, then even with boosting as far as we can past the cap, we aren't going to see much above 15PT

  • On the regular create crosses, there isn't a cap as such but 10.5 might be the highest you can get from two 9.9/100% breeding quality horses. I wouldn't be surprised to see a 10.6 turn up though

  • I've cloned a exceptional foundation, and the clone had a PT of 10.7

  • That 1st mare I showed in my previous post is from a B/Yellow cross. So it's possible to get intact progeny. The odds will be lower though.
  • @Kintara, that explanation makes total sense to me, thank you!
