Understanding White Factor
  • So I just bred this guy, I was excited when he came out solid looking because I have a bad habit of breeding too much white then not being able to breed anything because of lethal white! Lol, but I notice his white factor says extensive - does this mean there will still be a risk if I bred him with one that is say frame, W20 and large white? Also I think I've asked this somewhere else before, but can someone remind me if W29 is a lethal gene? It's not on the lethal white risk chart but I'm not sure if the one on wiki is up to date?

    Thank you!

  • He will be fine to cross on a mare that has frame and W29. I believe white factor is determined randomly but lethal white combinations, aside from homozygous frame, is the result of an excessive amount of white from the cumulative effects of KIT genes, splash, frame, and white factor.

The lethal white chart is outdated. W29 used to be W3, so follows the same risk as it shows on the chart. W15 used to be Sb2.
