"Green screen" magic?

@annismyrph I use gimp for mine but any photo editor will work. First I make sure to save the portrait of the foal on the basic blue backdrop if I think I'll want to do this so it's easy to cut him out of the background later. Like this:



Then I open the image in gimp and use the color or fuzzy select tool to select the backdrop and delete it, and play with the threshold until there's no light halo around him and also so not too much of the line art is missing. Sometimes I'll grow or shrink the selection by a pixel to make sure it's just right. Then I have his cutout (I mirrored his image afterwards but it's the same as doing that in the tack editor):



Tip: If you forget to save the foal image on the plain blue backdrop, you can put the blue backdrop on another foal that's the same bone weight and height and use that to make a template to cut out any backdrop.

Then I save an image of the dam with her scooted up a little so they can share the same shadow. The extra tall backdrops are nice for this so they don't look crowded and then you can crop it down slightly again later.



And then just place the foal so that they look natural together, crop it if you like, and save. :)
