Quick question about White lethality
-
I have read the discussions and seen the chart on white lethality. I was just wondering about sabino and splash: are these genes only lethal when paired with frame, correct? If I breed a sabino frame with a splash frame I will most likely get a lethal foal?
Thanks for the help,
WH -
No.
Splash is not lethal with frame. Sabino is not lethal with frame.
Frame can be lethal with frame.
These are all different genes. Splash is on the, er, splash allele. Sabino is a variation of KIT. Frame is lethal white (overo? anyone? lwo?)
ALL of these genes do contribute to a horse's overall white level. Any horse that would be born 101% white from any combination of genes will, I believe, be non viable, but by themselves, or in combination, splash and sabino are generally very safe. Frame is not. White (also KIT, like sabino) is very complex.Post edited by Stone Silo Farm at 2017-12-10 16:26:46 -
I think I might have worded it wrong.
If I have a stallion that is splash with no frame, and I breed it to a mare with splash and frame, the foal won't die because it's not possible to have a foal with two Olw because the sire doesn't have Olw.
But say that sire does have Olw, and the mare has Olw, there's a chance the foal could die cause it could be homozygous for Olw.
But if you breed two horses that don't have any Olw, it doesn't die unless those horses have other lethal genes like KITw or KIT10, etc.
Here's an example of my two horses:
ES Jamaica Me Crazy
ES Red Zephyr
The mare (top) is homo for Sps and also has Olw. The sire is hetero for Sps but has Olw as well, that's why they both have "Splash Frame" in their name. If I breed these horses together the foal could be lethal white.
ES Up In Flames
But say I bred her to this one instead, who has homo Sps but NO Olw, the foal wouldn't die, correct? All my stallions are up for breeding and I just want to make sure that people are cautious when breeding to my horses with Olw and W and other lethal genes. :)Post edited by Novella34 at 2017-12-10 16:38:41 -
Yes, that's more or less correct. The Olw + Olw cross has a 25% or 1 in 4 chance of a dead foal every single time.
If it's JUST a splash + splash cross I don't think it's possible to get too much white, even if one of them has frame. And as far as I know, frame is not itself lethal with any of the KIT genes (white, sabino, etc.) -
Gotcha, so I should warn people about the horses that have frame (Olw) not horses that have splash or sabino without Olw?
