To add spots or to not add spots....
-
Scored this lovely dark DP bay out of the auction. She was completely untested, but she passed SBA!
Now the question is... add spots? Or not add spots? Will she have big spots? Or will my dreams be crushed and she’ll have little spots. :)) I wish she already had PATN. Oh well.
Do we suppose she is het or Hom DP?
Do I add spots or hope I get big spots during Appy Hour? (If I don’t forget again)

(Fixating on big spots and planning an Appy GMT project horse is how I’m attempting to hold onto what sanity I have left. I’ll add more potential projects that this girl is “competing” with later!)

I think her dapples are lovely ; she might look something like these if you add spots :
LG PrincessPeach
LG Wishes
LG Foxtrot

She is hetero DP. Just like with liver chestnuts a homo DP is significantly different. Chestnuts turn turn black if they are hom DP, and hom DP bays turn a much darker look, more deeper and darker brown and especially a lot less reddish. And, most of the time, if they are hom DP they will have much more pronounced dappling.
These are some of my hom DP bays for comparison:
MS2 PashminaTwisterKP2hDP
While the splash makes it harder to see, you can see on her hip and belly that she is a lot darker brown and that her dapples are more pronounced but also of a different shade than your mare.
Same with this mare:
MS2 SHOW hDP 10060488
Even harder to see, but she is a deeper darker shade of bay, almost like a dense dark brown or a dark muddy color.
You can also see it on this foal I bred this season, as well as the pronounced dappling:
MS2 hDP 10609854
And to be sure, I looked up some GMT'd cherry drops (who are hom for DP):
RS Star of Cheery
But even still she is a looker! DP bays are always so nice :) And I'd say go for the spots, you only know it when you try!HJ1 160524

If you want to add another Extension to her too, I can send you some straws from Showtime. He is hom DP and I know he throws big spots.

Such a subtle difference between het and him DP on bays. Her dapples change a bit when I reroll her.
I’ve thought about doing a test breed with my big spot stallion to see if she throws big spots with him or not. But that’s crossing my fingers that he actually throws his LP. He’s not been doing a good job of that this season. Maybe I’ll flush her.
Ultimately, I would want to make her pearl or cream and pearl, too. It will take me a bit to save enough, but that will keep me occupied for a while lol it would be easier/quicker to start with one that is already an Appy or at least has pattern.
The other candidates:
These are stallions who we be changed to makes. A freaking Friday and a cherry drop. Both have PATN
10129412 CD
FreakyFridaypgmt
FF would get at least one frame taken off and the cherry drop would get at least sooty. Cream and/or pearl, too.
The problem with any of them is that I have no guarantee of big spots. As my small spot FF shows
Px1 Corona
The other two candidates are mares and also both have patn which saves me GMTs

I have a bit of an obsession with big spots and big spots on cream/pearl.
Like these:
WS1 Design A Shadow
Px2 Designed A Princess
BC1 Eve
Just big spots are cool, too.
Blu, showtime is Era 6, isn’t he? I mostly work with 7/8 for my Appy line. -
I'm not really sure. I'll go look.

I've sent you a little something so you can add Lp via the GMT lab ;)
If you like I can also sell you straws from this guy:
MS MarzipanCookies hDPhSF
Before I GMT'd him to be hom appy he had really big spots! He is hom DP hom Snowflake and hom PATN1.HJ1 160524

You guys seem experienced in spots. Why does my Appaloosa not have anything but specks?

Oh, wow! Thank you MasterStables!
Look at my pretty girl now!
Px1 Gratitude
She has medium size spots. It’s ok, she’s super pretty! -
SapphireFarm, you need a PATN gene on your Appy for spots. With LP only they usually look like yours. :)

Yay medium spots is better than tiny spots right? :D I'm glad she turned out okayHJ1 160524

It’s because her body has vanished but her spots haven’t :)
