If you cull those older than ten that are leveled off and are near the bottom or their show lists for several shows, you will loose very little money by auctioning them. You get the daily payout for auctioning horses older than ten, and if they've leveled off at the bottom of their class, they are unlikely to either earn much income or gain additional points to add to their daily bonus. So that's where I start. I will also get rid of low point horses if they're not fantastic showers and I can replace their stall slot with either a higher pointed horse or a foal with a great PT (i.e., will become is higher pointed horse).

If you're concerned about the hit to your show bonus, you can take some of your auction proceeds and either buy cheap pointed horses or high pointed/high earners at the auction. Thus far in my culls, I've been able to replace most of my auctioned off points for fewer stalls and less money than I've earned in the auction.

I fully confess that I give some horses free passes to keep their stalls until they die, 100% of of sentiment.
