Making progress in my new hobby
-
I recently started trying my hand at painting small model horses, and I'm really enjoying it! So I wanted to share my new hobby with fellow horse lovers.
I still need to coat all of them with sealant, but it's a clear matte finish, so it shouldn't affect the colors much, if at all.

The improvement between my first three and the ones I've done since is mostly due to learning that you're supposed to thin the acrylic paint to about the consistency of milk, not just leave it in its initial thicker state. Made me face-palm a bit, and now I mostly just see the brush stroke lines on those first three models, but at least the colors and patterns turned out the way I wanted.

This is the reference photo I used for the Tennessee Walker. I tried to make him look like the Walker I had as a kid, and I'm pretty happy with how he turned out.

The Grullo stud is my most recent one and the first model I've finished with pan pastels for the final blending. I keep tweaking the blend on his neck a little bit, and I need to put another coat of paint on his front hooves before I spray him with sealant, but I am kinda loving how he looks!Post edited by MackZ at 2026-03-11 02:58:31 -

Sounds like you are ready to get them to a show.
I have been showing model horses for over 30 years. Look up the north American model horse show association (Namhsa.org)
