Determining foal quality
-
When breeding foals, how do you decide who to keep? Highest PT? High level papers? Do PT and paper level correlate or are they unrelated?
-
It depends on what I'm breeding for. And I'm more likely to keep fillies over colts.
Foals from foundations (so 2nd generation) MUST be A or Blue papered, that narrows down what I keep drastically. Then they have to match the genes I'm looking for, if they aren't Hom DP, that's an instant spay/geld. If the PT score is over 10.4 I'll keep them in my show barns, if they're below that I'll put them in the auction to try to make up for some of the breeding costs. But when I started, my breeding goals were VERY different. My best advice is to keep as many horses as you can and show them so they earn points and make you money! I learned that very late in my game :))
Here's a snippet about PT scores from the FAQ page (linked below):
The Performance Inspection will give you a general idea about how well and how long your horse will perform in shows. Lower scores do not mean that a horse will be a bad show horse, only that they may not make it to the higher levels of showing, the elite classes like Grand Prix. They can still make you money even in their lower level classes, points are points no matter where they are earned.
As soon as a horse is spayed or gelded they begin to earn extra training points with every training session. This gives them the potential to be better show horses, so they earn more show points, which adds to your daily show bonus
Papers:
This inspection [Breeding Inspection] will provide you with an idea of how good a breeder your horse will be. Whereas Breeding Advice and Strict Breeding Advice will tell you if a horse SHOULD be bred, Breeding Inspection will identify the level of that breeding ability. Stallions and mares have different papering ranks/levels.
I recommend taking a look at this FAQ Page: Here and reading the Testing 101 section, it has very helpful info! If you have time to scroll through all of it, it's a good place to start in understanding how the game works too!

Very helpful information! Thank you so much for taking the time. I’ll be sure to check out the FAQ

Of course! Welcome to the game :) it can be tricky to navigate at first but the community is wonderful at helping out and answering questions!

I am the same as kgstable. I start with B/red foundations and 2nd gen must be A/blue or they are gelded/spayed. I comparison test from 3rd gen and upwards. Only superior progeny are kept intact.
I don't tend to geld or spay based on gene inheritance, I figure I can always GMT. Nor do I auction any of my stock. They all become show stock.
