Checking for DP in the gene lab? (trying to figure on this non-sooty bay mare...)
  • I've seen people mention that they found out in the gene lab that a horse they were going to add DP to already had it. So I bought a GMT and went to check on one of my maybe DP mares. The alleles show up as question marks and it says I will only be charged if the horse doesn't already have DP. Is it only through buying DP that people find out whether or not their horse has it? Not just by looking in the gene lab?

'Cause I'm wondering about this mare. Does this sort of rich cherry bay coat always mean DP? I have side by side pictures here next to another similar mare with a much more washed out looking red.

I looked in a couple of the DP guides that have been put together on the forum and didn't find any non-sooty bays to compare to... So what do you think? Does the first mare have DP?

    Thanks!
  • That first mare I'm pretty certain has Dp. The second mare actually might, but I'm not used to E A bays without sooty. Could be just a normal variation in expression making her a little brighter.

  • Thanks! I'm pretty sure about her too. I recognize non-sooty DP in wild bays now, and it got me wondering about this deep red color I've seen on other bays. I would breed her to a hom-sooty chestnut to see if I can get a liver... but she's EE, so that won't work... :P

Correct. I am the only one that can just look and see.
