Do you cull showhorses?
  • Just curious, do you ever go through your show barns and cull low performers? What do you look for? How many seasons do you give new creates/foals to perform before you decide whether to cull them?

  • I must admit that I don't usually do that. Most show horses will really start paying for themselves only once they level off. Then, if they are at the bottom of their classes, you might want to cull any that have gathered a very low number of points over their life time, but I tend to keep them anyway, because my stable is large enough that I can afford to. Other players will give you other answers, I'm sure. :)

  • I keep all my show horses until they pass simply because I can't afford to cull them. Every point they earn counts.
  • I have started going through my older showers for culling. My barn can hold over 12000 horses so sometimes I just want to get that number down. A lot of the time I will find 10 to 15 year olds that don't pull their weight at all. I typically go by less than 500 points and leveled off. With the new auction base price system most of them are better sold than kept even at slightly higher points. Show results come in handy here. You can get a feel for them by where they are placing. This leaves room for new foals and I don't have to buy more barns.

It's easy to forget just how many horses you have.
  • I cull only when I run out of space...which is currently every season. I'll become self sustaining eventually.
