Phenotype Question - What Causes Those Spots?
-
Hey everyone,
I just created this Ex Pro App stud and I love the small delicate spots throughout his coat! I was wondering if anyone could tell me what they are called (if anything) or what causes them? I havent had an app come out like him before.
His genes are EE Aa CC nd2nd2 gg FF SstyS PP LLlp ECA3P+ECA3P+ WF: None, so nothing crazy that I'm familiar with. Is it a product of the +/+ or something in the Lp genes?
Thanks!!

It's varnish. It's a hidden gene that all Appaloosa have..
-
By the time he's done he'll probably be almost gray.

One of my boys I'm doing a gif on as he varnishes.. I'm planning on continuing it until he ages out of the gamePost edited by LEAcres at 2019-03-30 19:16:30

Just to clarify, not all appys have varnish. It can be recessive just like other genes. When snowflake was for sale on server two i found a couple horses who were VV vs VrnVrn or VrnV. V is recessive, Vrn is Varnish, and Vsn is snowflake. But as said it is a hidden gene so you can't test for it. I only know about it from snowflake in the RGS. So you can breed appys with recessive varnish and they won't white out completely :)Post edited by HayesStable at 2019-03-30 19:26:45Bluegrass Server: HayesStable - 221755

There are excellent examples if you search for horses with LP! The first three horses are 28-29 and yet still have vibrant coloring :)

Hayes, have you posted the pictures on anything besides chat? I went to look at them the other day and I thought you had two lists of pictures up, I only found one there.
-
The links for the pictures is in the chat room description in the top right corner (if you're on a desktop, not sure where it is for mobile). Here are both of them :)

Oh wow! I didn't know that no varnish was possible! Thank you for clarifying!Thanked by 1HayesStable

Yep :) That's why i started the "Varnish Experiment"! I wanted to see how much each variation of the varnish gene whited out. I wanted to see if VV horses kept all their color or if they still lost a little without turning completely white. It will take several seasons but i plan on updating the images every season! I might do what you did and make the images into a gif!Bluegrass Server: HayesStable - 221755

Thank you. I'm on a mobile, but next time I'll switch to desktop site.Thanked by 1HayesStable

I haven't been able to look at the current results since I'm on mobile :(
But I just got a new phone that lets me switch between desktop and mobile (my old phone, once I was on desktop I couldn't get it back to mobile so it stayed on mobile)Thanked by 1HayesStable -
It looks like heavy varnish can either be two copies of the gene varnish...or het snowflake. I've been saving heavily varnished creates because I want to get a hom stud to test them against. Still waiting on snowflake to come up in the sale.
-
Oh I just saved a bunch of pictures of my 2 year olds until they age out if the game! I can't wait to see the results. I think I'm doing it with 75 or so horses?
Eh no, I lied, it's 64 horses. But still it's a lot of horses I'm doing it with. I can't wait to see the results! Wait, I just said that? Well thats cause I can't, haha!Post edited by Wolvevenfrost at 2019-03-30 19:50:07 -
I tried doing it with all of my apps but it became too much
-
I have way too many apps to do that either so I just decided to do it with my 2 year olds. It would have overwhelmed me very quickly if I did all....ehhhhuh-huh. :-S
-
This was awesome, thanks so much everyone! I'll have to keep an eye out for varnish on my other apps and watch as it pops up as they age :)

All appies will varnish. Varnishing is just part of the leopard gene. Some have genes that suppress or promote it.Need to contact me? Read this first.
